Empowering Grassroots Voices in Community-Based Mental Health Care: Strengthening Storytelling Skills of Ember Innovators

Apr 10, 2025

Community-based mental health initiatives have a wealth of insight in providing care to their communities, but communicating about their transformative work tends to not be a priority. In Ember’s 5 years of work in supporting many such grassroots organisations, we have noticed that this is because:

  • In the context of low resources, small teams and time shortages, taking care of communities through programmatic activities always comes first, pushing communication to the bottom of the priority list.
  • They operate on a shoestring budget, with limited resources to allocate for communications.
  • Community-based organisations with potentially strong storytellers in their team lack technological and creative skills to capture their unique work, resulting in no visual assets telling their stories.

To address this, Ember launched a series of creative storytelling projects aimed at equipping our Partner Innovators with essential skills in visual storytelling. This initiative helps them amplify their voices and showcase their impact more effectively.

Through immersive visits, photography sessions to create a visual repository, a global exhibition to enhance visibility, and hands-on workshops in mobile photography and storytelling, we have supported our Innovators in elevating their work, expanding their outreach, and gaining the recognition they deserve.
