The Care Paradox: Who will take care of the carers?
Mental health carers working in community-based organisations in low-resource settings often experience great psychological and emotional distress because of the nature of their job. Therefore, while they are trained to help others, mental health workers also need to be to be supported in their own wellbeing.
Yet, while many praise their vital contribution to society, there are often very little resources available to support the wellbeing of these carers. But if carers aren’t able to support their own mental health, how can they possibly deliver effective and sustainable care to others?
This is the question that drove us, at Ember, to commit to supporting the wellbeing of our
partner innovators by creating the Ember Wellbeing Fund.
This fund is dedicated to promoting wellbeing activities and resources for the teams behind the grassroots mental health projects we work with.
The success of our programme has shown us the critical impact that wellbeing initiatives can have not only on workers themselves, but also on the cohesion and resilience of mental health organisations and, consequently, on their impact on the ground.
In our latest piece, we explore why efforts to support the wellbeing of mental health carers must be extended in the entire global mental health ecosystem.
